FPGA-Accelerated PostGIS
Geospatial data is exploding. Maps, GPS, logistics, urban planning — everything depends on fast spatial queries. We accelerated PostGIS, the geospatial extension of PostgreSQL, by running geometry calculations directly on FPGA.
What we did
- Shortest path calculation (Dijkstra’s algorithm) on massive maps
- Complex spatial queries — intersections, distances, buffer zones
- Direct comparison between pure software execution and FPGA acceleration
- GIS mobile application as a demonstrator — WisePath POC
Results
The FPGA processes geospatial queries at a speed that pure software cannot match. The CPU is outclassed.
Trajectory and shortest-path calculations on massive datasets become instantaneous.
